It is not contagious.
Coin-shaped patches of hair loss on the scalp, caused by a disorder of the immune system that damages the body's own hair follicles. It can appear on the head, beard, moustache and eyelashes. Alopecia areata is also known as pelade or "hair breaker". It is not contagious.
The exact cause is not known; stress and nervous factors are known to play an important role. The hair loss results from lymphocyte cells releasing cytokines.

Complete loss of the hair on the head, leaving the scalp shiny and bare.

Ask a specialist →What are the different types of alopecia?
- Androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness)
- Alopecia areata (autoimmune, patchy hair loss)
- Traction alopecia (from tight hairstyles)
- Telogen effluvium (stress, illness, hormonal; temporary)
- Scarring alopecia (permanent damage at the root)
Can alopecia be treated?
There is no universal cure; treatments are available to manage and slow hair loss. Some cases, such as telogen effluvium, can resolve on their own; others require medical intervention.
Is alopecia hereditary?
Some types, such as androgenetic alopecia, are hereditary and run in families.
Can stress cause alopecia?
Yes. Stress can cause temporary hair loss such as telogen effluvium and can trigger the autoimmune reactions that lead to alopecia areata.
Does wearing a hat cause alopecia?
No. However, harsh chemical treatments, excessive heat and tight hairstyles can cause thinning or breakage.
Is a hair system suitable for people with alopecia?
It is usually a suitable solution; an individual assessment is needed. It offers fast results, a natural look, painless fitting and styling flexibility. If there is inflammation, a wound or sensitivity in the area, it must be treated first.
Are there other solutions besides a hair system?
- Cortisone injections
- PRP treatment
- Special shampoos and lotions
- Hair simulation (micropigmentation)
For medical treatment, consult your dermatologist.
